4 Year Old Shot Dead By Religious Leader for ‘Being Gay’

A Home-Schooling religious zealot named Peter Moses in North Carolina is looking at the death penalty after having shot his 4-year-old step-son and having beaten and shot a young woman to death. The 4-year-old’s crime? He was believed to be gay, and that is a sin. The woman’s crime? She couldn’t bear his children. This was the final result after multiple beatings, during which the rest of Mr. Moses’s flock would take part in savagely beating the child and the woman. Sickening.

They aren't some Charles Manson cult. There are literally tens of thousands of these guys, and they are clearly referred to as a religious sect. They're fucking crazy, but that doesn't stop them from being a religion.

4 years old?! Even if there is a way to know someone's sexual orientation at that age, (and there isn't) why kill? Nevermind the moral issues. If being gay is a sin because we're supposed to have kids and multiply, then what does murder accomplish? Corpses don't breed. What sense does that make?

There's a bit more to the "Black Hebrews" phenomenon than the JVL article lets on. And contrary to what someone else said, there are not tens of thousands of them, they are extreme minorities within Black Christianity.

The longest Christian denominational names that I'm aware of are from "Hebrew Pentecostals", out of the Holiness tradition, that date back to 1903. (The "Black Hebrews" that took up in Israel came out of the 60s and have more in common with the Rastafarians, so the idea is much older than them -- the rest make no claim to right of return.) You can tell them by their "House of God" or "Church of the Living God" monikers.

That's beyond messed up. How a decent person finds God and turns into a raging psycho is beyond me. I didn't lose my sanity when I became a Christian.

Also why should a 4 year old be pinned with a sexual orientation.? He's just FOUR freaking years old!

It's only through relatively recent antagonistic use that the word "cult" began to describe a Bad Thing. The old meaning just referred to any religious belief that was fostered (cultivated). Catholic writers often would describe the 'cult of Mary' or 'cult of the saints' in totally neutral or favorable discussion.

Outside of themselves, I don't think anyone would mistake them for Jews, be they the people in Dimona or the jackasses yelling at passersby in Harlem. The latter have a lot more in common with the FDLS Mormons, Branch Davidians, and other only-in-America inventions trying to cast themselves as the "true" Jews. The Hebrew Pentecostals are basically a Holiness/Sabbatarian sect who seem content with being Christians. But within even Black Christianity, they're pretty obscure.

I do find it interesting the press is still saying Moses + wives are suspected of being BHs, even with all the publicity about them. One would think they would know by now.

I agree. I don't know what group they fall under, but they are a religious sect. I do however, stand by my assertion that there are tens of thousands of them. There is around 2,500 in Israel, and between 25,000 and 40,000 in the US.

They reject the story in favor of one in which they are the real Jews. They pull this all out of their ass, of course, but so did Joseph Smith when he founded Mormonism. Are Mormons a cult?

Yeah that's one of those articles that folds in the Christians (i.e. the people who have "Church" in their title) with the "we're the true Jews" types, which is where I suspect those numbers come from. Jury's still out on what these people were but I doubt they were from the Church of...set. I also haven't read the Sundquist book that is the reference for that claim, but it looks like a worthy read.

What I can say is, among Black Christians, the "Church of living God " types were among the first to originate this idea of "returning" to some misappropriation of "Judaism", and go make a separate set of denominations out of it. The "Black Hebrews" cranks and the people in Dimona took up those ideas and ran with them, but as you note they weren't alone by any means.

The Mormons do it, the British Israelite bigots do it, the Rastafarians do it, the Puritans were infamous for picturing their new digs as "Zion", the list goes on.

All of Christianity has been making the bogus claim of "true" inheritance of "real" Judaism for +-1800 years in some form, some more stridently than others, of course.

So since so many sects label all others "cults" and the feeling's mutual, the term is really just good for polemics, anymore. Personally, I don't use it, but understand that/why others do.
